When the Calendar Remembers Before You Do

September 04, 20262 min read

Yesterday I felt off all day. Not sad exactly — just off. Something was wrong and I couldn’t name it. A few things happened that made the day genuinely hard, and I overthought half of it, spinning on things that probably didn’t deserve that much of my brain.

Then around 8pm while having a late dinner with my daughter it hit me, it was our anniversary. 21 years. The 4th one I’ve spent without him. We got to talking about it being Labor Day weekend and then I was smacked in the face with it. We met the Friday fo Labor Day weekend and got married Labor Day weekend…. We always tried to use this weekend as a time to celebrate even when on the soccer fields all weekend like we did a couple of years.

Realizing what the date was suddenly made sense of the whole day. My body knew before I did. It had been carrying the date all along, quietly, while my conscious mind was busy being confused about why nothing felt right.

This is the part of grief nobody prepares you for — the unacknowledged grief, the anticipatory grief, the pre-grief that shows up before you’ve even looked at the calendar. You don’t get to choose when it arrives. It just does, and then you spend the day feeling crazy until you figure out why.

To make it worse, tomorrow is the 23rd anniversary of the day we met. Two hard days, back to back. Two dates that would mean everything if he were still here, and now just mean something different. Even the years we were struggling, or forgot about one and remembered the other. We did that often because 9/3/05 and 9/5/03.

So — what do you do with days like that?

You make note of them. Acknowledge that you don’t have to be okay on the actual date. Grief on the day itself is different from missing someone generally, and it deserves its own space, not a forced smile through it.

Do you light a candle? Say his name out loud to someone? Do something he would’ve loved. Write him a letter about what’s changed since he’s been gone. Let yourself have the day instead of pushing through it.

If you’re in this too — if you’ve got dates on your calendar that used to mean one thing and now mean another — I see you. You’re not crazy for feeling off before you know why. Your body remembers. Let it.
